Bisley recognised with second Design Guild Mark

May 21, 2019|

BOB, the beautifully hand-crafted modular storage and display system from Bisley, has been awarded a Design Guild Mark.

Developed in collaboration with award winning British designer Paul Kelley, BOB’s infinite configurations can be adapted for any use and environment, whether at home or in the workplace. The collaboration unifies Kelley’s design innovations with the craftsmanship and manufacturing expertise of Bisley.

The Design Guild Mark is awarded by The Furniture Makers’ Company, the City of London livery company and charity for the furnishing industry, in order to drive excellence and raise the profile of British design and innovation. Now in its eleventh year, the Mark recognises the highest standards in the design of furnishings in volume production by the finest designers working in Britain, or British designers working abroad.

BOB, a first all wood product for Bisley, is meticulously hand crafted and features a clever system that uses technology friendly magnets to securely lock the modules together. The beauty is in the simplicity and playfulness of the design; cubes and units click together to form different arrangements, allowing the user to change the design of the system instantly, whenever they choose.

Helen Owen, Marketing Director at Bisley commented:
“We couldn’t be more delighted to be awarded a Design Guild Mark for BOB. Collaborating with Paul Kelley on such a unique project has been a fantastic experience for Bisley. Together we have created a timeless quality piece of furniture that is functional, easy to adapt and beautiful, which allows people the flexibility to design their own spaces and reconfigure it instantly if their needs change”.

Paul Kelley added:
“The idea behind BOB was to create a piece of furniture which transcends trends, a product that is functional, easy to adapt and timeless. The design of BOB means the core of the system remains the same, but allows the user to change shapes and function when and where needed, be it tomorrow or ten years down the line.”

22 designs from the Furniture and 2D categories, representing the domestic and contract markets, have been awarded the prestigious Design Guild Mark in 2019.

The Design Guild Mark is judged by a panel of leading industry professionals. Each member of the panel is from the furniture, hospitality, commercial, retail or media industry. Judges must ensure that each submission meets the criteria of excellence in design, materials, manufacture and function.

Chaired by Rodney McMahon, this year’s eminent judging panel for the furniture category included:
Simon Alderson – twentytwentyone; Jeremy Myerson – Royal College of Art; Helen Berresford – ID:SR; Tom Pearce – Farrah & Pearce; Joanna Biggs – GA Design; Campbell Thompson – The Conran Shop; Elliott Koehler – Layer Design and Terence Woodgate – Terence Woodgate.

Rodney McMahon, chairman of the Design Guild Mark, commented:
“The variety and quality of designs applying for the Design Guild Mark always makes for an interesting judging day and this year we were pleased to meet many new designers and companies willing to put themselves forward. The insights of our judges and the challenging questions that they pose, ensure that the award of a Design Guild Mark is something to which to aspire.”
