A bespoke bureau unit offering accessible file storage was developed especially by Bisley for leading Irish firm of solicitors Byrne Wallace.
The practice – the fourth largest in Ireland – has recently moved to new 9,300 sq m offices within the iconic Grand Canal Square commercial/cultural development in Dublin, designed by architect Daniel Libeskind.
A key challenge of the project was designing storage for solicitors’ manilla filing envelopes. Bisley prototyped a number of solutions before delivering 320 bureau units, which are fixed on top of 1200mm-wide two-drawer LateralFile units. The combined unit provides ample storage that is easily accessed by solicitors working at adjacent desks.
The bureau units have an inclined base, providing “raked” storage to allow maximum visibility of files, which are stored spine-upwards. The interior of the unit is subdivided into nine compartments, while the lid is fitted with three magazine racks allowing the solicitors to keep files on view while working. A pair of gas struts ensure that the lid opens easily and will not trap fingers.
Also incorporated into the bureau is a 90mm thick roll-out shelf providing valuable additional workspace, with a load capacity of 80kg. A recessed grab handle is incorporated into the shelf design.
The high gloss black finish to the bureau top boxes is more commonly found in high-end cars, and is designed to remain unmarked by fingerprints. The lower unit is in a contrasting shade of white.
A similar colour scheme is used for matching desk pedestal units, which feature black angular Note drawer fronts custom-fitted to a white carcass.
Also specified by workplace designer Michael Collins Associates were 350 LateralFile storage units, each four drawers high, finished in matching white with black glass tops. The low height of these units ensures that sightlines are maintained across the open plan office.
The unique bureau solution has been deemed such a success that it was subsequently showcased at the Orgatec workplace furniture exhibition, held in Cologne in October 2010.
