Bisley storage has been extensively specified for a building which, at time of completion, gained Britain’s highest ever BREEAM rating for sustainability.

Manchester’s One Angel Square, the new HQ for Co-operative Group, scored 95% on its assessment and an ‘outstanding’ rating.

Bisley products, sourced by Phusei, were a perfect fit for the brief, which called for longevity and resilience in all aspects of the design. And as Bisley is a British manufacturer, this helped to fulfill the requirement to source products as locally as possible.

Among the huge number of Bisley LateralFile™ products specified were white low storage cabinets with tops upholstered in a pure wool, sustainably produced fabric, doubling as breakout seating, as well as three-drawer-high cabinets topped by special planters, to provide greenery throughout the workspaces.

LateralFile™ units installed at the ends of desks, plus the provision of personal lockers for staff, meant that no pedestals were needed. Bisley supplied the five-high banks of MySpace™ lockers, which cleverly include a drawer rather than cupboard door at the lowest level for ease of access. Each opening included a combination lock, to minimize disruption through key loss. The lockers were finished in bespoke shades of green, blue and red as a striking visual tool to indicate the zones replicated over each floor.

The naturally-ventilated 14 storey building, designed by 3Dreid, provides 323,000 sq ft of office space as well as facilities including an auditorium, exhibition area, cafe and meeting areas.

Other environmental features of the project include concrete floor slabs for thermal mass, while a double-skinned facade insulates the building during winter and provides ventilation during summer months. Low energy LED lighting was used throughout the building, while natural lighting was maximised, ensuring no desk is more than 23ft from a window.
